SIA Inspiration: Charles Alston
Welcome to the first SIA challenge of 2026! Marsha is our host, and here is her pick:
This is “ Harlem by Night “, a 1948 painting by Charles Alston , best known for his works during the Harlem Renaissance and his murals in Harlem, and was also the first African American instructor at MoMA. I think this is the perfect painting to start the new year with, because it looks like fireworks from afar, and up close, you can see a lot of dynamic shapes and movements that will be fun to interpret in an outfit.
