go bright (or go neutral?)

I thought it would be fun to pull out one of the subtle colors in these shorts and pair it with a coordinating cardigan. I also wanted to prove wrong the sales associate who told me (last year when I got them) that these shorts wouldn't work with more than a cream top. What do you think? Are these shorts meant to be paired only with neutral tops, or does the colorful combination work? Either way, I maintain that these shorts were $10 well spent. Gotta love LOFT's clearance rack.
